What is a Field Spaniel?

Field Spaniels are a rare breed, ranking 147th in registrations out of 200 AKC recognized breeds in 2023. Most people have never heard of a Field Spaniel nor ever had the opportunity to meet one, but once they do, they are intrigued by these beautiful spaniels that resemble a more moderate, older style spaniel that they may remember from their childhood or from history books.  Field Spaniels are often confused with field-bred or working type spaniels of other breeds, such as Cocker Spaniels and Springer Spaniels, but Field Spaniels are a unique breed with a history and character all their own.

The Field Spaniel is a breed known for its balanced combination of beauty and utility.  Originating in England, it was developed primarily for hunting in dense cover, particularly retrieving game, and many still hunt with their owners today. The breed is medium-sized, with a sturdy build and a silky, moderately feathered coat that comes in various shades of liver, black, or roan, or any of these colors with tan points.

Field Spaniels are characterized by their friendly, affectionate, and playful nature, making them excellent family companions. They are intelligent and willing to please, which makes them relatively easy to train, though they can be led astray by their strong noses and they are soft natured and do not respond well to harsh corrections. While they have a gentle disposition, they may be reserved around strangers. They are docile with a good "off-switch" in the house, but they do require regular exercise and mental stimulation to thrive.

With proper socialization and training, Field Spaniels can adapt well to various living situations, including apartments, as long as they receive enough exercise and attention. They enjoy being part of family activities and excel in dog sports such as rally, obedience, tracking, scentwork, and dock diving among many others. Overall, the Field Spaniel is a versatile and loyal breed that thrives in an engaging and loving environment.
